"Jeff Scheff dedicated his Bestselling book....Beautiful Boy..." to the women and men who have dedcated their lives to understanding and combating addiction at rehabs, hospitals, research centers, sober living and halfway houses, and organizations devoted to education about drug abuse, as well as the anonymous....the brave ones who keep coming back...at countless twelve step meetings every day and night throughout the world------to them and their families: the people who understand my familes story because they have lived and are living it, the familes of the addicted their children, brothers and sisters, friends, partners, busbands and wives and parents like me. 'It's just that you can't help them and it's all so discouraging", wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald. BUT THE TRUTH IS YOU DO, YOU HELP THEM, AND YOU HELP ONE ANOTHER, AND YOU HELPED ME".

I wholeheartedly share this sentiment and could have written it about a young man in Florida named Saul Kane. When I met Saul, he was the house manager of sober living home, located in Delray Beach, Florida. In looking back on my relationship with Saul, I feel he not only saved my son's life, but my life and sanity, as well. Last year, Saul, took a chance on my son. Their meeting occured in the middle of the night. Saul knew nothing about him, only that he was an addict, in a city far away from home, with nowhere to go. He took him into his half-way house, and this began a year long journey of commitment to my son. His commitment to my son's personal recovery and sobriety, was not a nine to five job. It was a tireless twenty four job....seven days a week. It was a commitment that included returning late night phone calls to scared parents. It was entertaining phone calls from heartbroken parents. It was a commitment that understood lapses in the recovery process and not giving up...constantly reassuring me that my son was 'worth saving'. To a parent of an addict, those words sustained me and gave me hope; after many years of hopelessness.

Saul's commitment to my son was a time consuming, selfless venture. When I think of the time expended on my son, I have to remember he was not the only young man in Saul's care...I needed to multiply it several times over. Did all these young men, get the same time and attention??? There is no question in my mind. I actually met many of them during my visits to Delray Beach. The sentiment expressed by these young men, were similar...."I am not sure I would have made it without Saul".

Saul Kane is truly one of the most intellectually honest men I know. I am committed to Saul, his character and his work, in the same manner he is committed to the men, young and old who come to his program. I have seen scared persons come into his program and transition into the "brave ones...who keep coming back". I have thanked God many times for Saul Kane."

Saul-

I will start with a simple thank you, but nothing that you have done for me and my son has been simple.

Your understanding of the process of recovery has provided us both new insights into the journey towards living a sober life. My son has been in and out of treatment and many halfway houses without a lot of success. Something is clicking this time and I attribute his new attitude to your willingness to show him there is hope because you had hope for him. Your house has given him sober friends that understand the 12 steps and practice what they preach. This has meant so much to him as he works through early recovery. Thank you.

You have taught me to embrace the old Al-Anon adage, “you did not cause it, you can’t control it, and you can not cure it”. So many times your conversations have given me the strength to stand strong and believe the three C’s-something nearly impossible for the mother of an addict. I am getting my life back. Thank you.

Yours is a holistic approach to the process of recovery and I believe that my son and I has found a solid link in the recovery community in Delray through you.

Again my thanks but this can not begin to express my sincere gratitude. I will end with a teaching from you that means so much to me now-

Namaste

"This place offers so much more than just a halfway house, Saul really showed me how to live."

"I ran the circuit of treatment centers and sober living places for four years.  No one ever took the time to show me what they showed me here.  Now, I have just over 6 months clean and sober for the first time in my life and my parents are finally proud of me.  Thank you Saul."

"I am writing to you to express my gratitude for your work with our son.  Tommy was such a pleasant boy growing up, involved in everything, and always smiling.  Then came the marijuana and he began to isolate and steer away from all his activities.  This progressed to heavier drugs which lead to many legal consequences.

We've tried many forms of counseling, treatment and even many other sober living facilities.  It wasn't until we found your place Saul, that Tommy has found a way to regain his self confidence and his true smile back.

I can't thank you enough for the work you have done with our son.  He talks about you every time we talk on the phone.  Thank you for helping us get Tommy back."

Dear Saul

Firstly i would like to thank you, our son is healthy drives his own car and pays his own bills. He is 28 and enrolled in college, with no small thanks to you. what you did for him and continue to do for others is amazing. He has been through all the other halfway houses (Healing Properties, Sober living, New Beginnings) and they were all the same, very effective on rent day and not on any other...

Your work and story is impressive.Your gift for helping other men is inspiring and we are truly blessed to be one of hundreds of success stories in your life.
may god bless and keep you until our paths cross again,

Jim S.

I have known Saul Kane for many months, since my son became a resident at a group home under his supervision. Mr. Kane’s approach to counseling is always handled with extreme care and understanding. There is no task too great for him. He is always sacrificing his time at a moment’s notice. He remains flexible with his hours, on call, day or night to help those in need for immediate assistance.

As new situations arise, Saul has the strength at analyzing problems, evaluating what needs to be done and communicating the solution with care. Always considering the emotions of parents who suffer seeing their children struggle, he communicates well in both written and spoken formats. I feel very comfortable knowing that Saul is trustworthy and true to his word. I find it easy to confide in him.

Depending on the individual, who is unique in his situation, Saul takes that extra step to counsel. He is a great asset to his profession, his business and the community. As difficult it is to see your child struggling, it is also comforting to know Saul is there for you. His capabilities and energy are to be honored. It truly does take a village. I am forever grateful.
